My Secret Deli!
While on a short break from the day, we stopped for a cocktail at Wayo’s Beachside Bar. Ruby was working and Wayo was shuffling around behind the scenes. A delivery guy showed up on a bike and handed over a big bag full of food to Ruby and when we asked her where it was from, she said that they all ordered lunch from My Secret Deli. Huh?! Where is this place and why have I never heard of it? Apparently, it really is a secret!
Not really. Ruby gave us directions to it’s location – about a block and a half from our house – so we headed over to check it out. Because we had already eaten lunch, we just stopped in to take a peek at the menu or grab a paper one to bring back to the house. We were greeted by Oscar, the owner, and asked if he had a menu we could have and he handed us a fully laminated one and told us to take it home. We told him we would bring it back but he insisted we keep it and proceeded to staple the phone number to it for our convenience. So nice!! Here is Oscar.
After seeing this menu, it was decided that we would be coming back for lunch tomorrow – FOR SURE! (Prices are all in Belize dollars).
Lunch On a Budget – And An Empty Stomach
Upon entering this quaint little restaurant, you could smell deliciousness in the air. This was going to be a GREAT lunch – I could tell! Looks like we have a selection of cold beer, too!
The special on the menu every day is either stewed chicken, pork or beef served with a choice of rice & beans, or coconut rice with stewed beans. They also have 2 other specials each day. They serve a different entrée and the “soup du jour” as different options.
The daily soup specials are as follows:
Monday – Escabeche
Tuesday – Chilmole aka Black Dinner (I’ve seen different spellings of this and I REALLY want to try it!)
Wednesday – Chicken Soup
Thursday – Beef Soup
Friday – Conch Soup AND Cow Foot Soup (I crinkled up my nose at this one. Apparently, Oscar doesn’t like it either)
Saturday – Chicken/Beef Combo Soup
Sunday – Closed
Todays secondary lunch special was fried chicken with mashed potatoes and rice and beans. We both ordered the fried chicken and waited patiently for our lunches to arrive. If you order something other than a “special”, you will be waiting for your food for a longer period time. Probably still worth the wait, I’m guessing.
Our meals arrived and we couldn’t have been happier! Look at this!
The chicken was very moist and the rice and beans were the BEST I’ve had in San Pedro, so far!
The next morning we tried the fruit smoothies. We ordered pineapple/banana smoothies and for someone like me, who isn’t a big breakfast eater, this was a great alternative. With friends coming in from Minnesota to visit for a couple of weeks, we informed Oscar that he will probably be seeing a lot of us since it’s so close to our house.
In case you’re curious, here are the hours for My Secret Deli. You just HAVE to go visit Oscar and the rest of the staff! They are all so friendly and eager to please. Enjoy!
